Pottstown School District, Borough Recover More Than $2 Million in Delinquent Taxes
Pottstown School District has a reason to celebrate. The district is seeing a large revenue increase due to more than $2 million recovered over the past year in delinquent real estate taxes.
A total of $2,302,584.41 was recovered by the end of 2011. Meanwhile, across town, the Borough of Pottstown collected $951,187.68 in delinquent real estate taxes and past due user fees in 2011. Delinquent real estate taxes collected totaled $549,925.16, and delinquent water, sewer and trash fees collected totaled $401,262.52.
The money was recovered in partnership with Portnoff Law Associates, a law firm contracted separately by the school district and borough. Headquartered in Norristown, Portnoff Law Associates specializes in recovering delinquent real estate taxes and delinquent municipal fees owed to school districts and municipalities across Pennsylvania.
The collection effort has yielded another positive result. Not only has Pottstown School District and the Borough of Pottstown recovered money past due, both have seen a large drop in the number of delinquencies. Delinquencies are down 10 percent in the Pottstown School District, and 16 percent in the Borough of Pottstown.
“It is not surprising that fewer delinquencies were incurred,” said Portnoff Law Associates President Michelle Portnoff. “Based on our experience across the state, once property owners see a taxing district is serious about the collection of delinquent taxes and fees, they tend to become timely taxpayers.”
When left uncollected, delinquent taxes and user fees represent a financial challenge for school districts and municipalities and create an unfair burden on timely taxpayers as they ultimately subsidize residents who choose not to pay. The $2.3 million recovered by Pottstown School District and more than $950,000 collected by Pottstown Borough will finance crucial programs and projects.
