Car Enthusiasts Rally To Help One Of Their Own

Local clubs will host a benefit car show at Rubright Racing, 826 North Lewis Road in Limerick, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 31.

Scott Grebe's Facebook entries are a clear testament to his love of family and friends.

Some of his posts are heartbreaking.

"My world is crashing down," he writes last month. "I think (about) what this world would be like without me and what it would be like to not be in pain and free of all worries, (but then) I look at my beautiful wife sleeping next to me and I think that would cause her more pain (than) I am in."

Despite his recent cancer diagnosis -- which left his family struggling to pay bills -- Grebe, 43, of Pottstown, maintains a sense of humor.

"I am at my lowest as far as money goes," he writes last week. "So (thinking of what to sell next,) some tools, car parts, blood or some sperm ... "

That wide range of raw, human honesty is part of what people love about Grebe.

A bunch of Grebe's local car enthusiast friends want him to know he's not alone in his fight against cancer.

Boyertown-based Wicked Effects Car Club and Pottstown Classics Car Club will team with others in the community to raise money for the Grebe family.

“(Grebe) has been a friend, more like a brother, of mine for the past 13 years,” Andrew Bealer, owner and president of Wicked Effects Car Club, said via Facebook message.

“He has been out of work for some time and has done everything to support his family including selling his prized Thunderbird that he dreamed of fully restoring," Bealer said.

Meanwhile, the Grebe family's expenses -- including rent, utility and medical bills -- continue to pile up, Bealer said.

So Bealer decided to use Wicked Effects and its fund-raising experience to help the Grebe family.

“We are best known for our (For The Cure) car shows held in Pottstown where we raise money for the children with cancer," Bealer said. "We are blessed enough to have a good reputation and such great friends that last minute we are able to set up an End of Year Car Cruise/Benefit for the Grebe family.”

Bealer thanked Mark Rubright, owner of Rubright Racing in Limerick, “for allowing us to use the parking lot of his shop for the show.”

Additionally, Boobie Nation -- a local non-profit group that raises money and awareness to fight cancer -- the Pottstown Classics Car Club and Trophy-n-Plaque Shack of Pottstown are helping to publicize and organize the event led by Wicked Effects.

The car show will take place at Rubright Racing, 826 North Lewis Road in Limerick, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 31.

Trophies will be awarded in various categories.

“We will also have hot coffee available to help warm the bodies of all the warm spirited participants,” Bealer said.

The event is open to all, "but especially those who have domestic muscle cars, foreign customized cars, trucks and of the drag strip street eliminator class," said Don Villanova of Pottstown Classics Car Club via Facebook message. "It is a free show but we ask that all participants come prepared to make as generous a donation as they can."

Grebe said he's grateful for the support.

"I am not very good at asking for help," he said. "A car show in my eyes is a great way to raise money for anything because the people that show up take pride in their cars ... I would like to thank everyone in advance from the bottom of my heart."
