Sandusky Guilty: Is It the Right Call?
Jerry Sandusky probably will spend the rest of his life in prison. Do you agree with the verdict? Vote in our poll.
Disgraced ex-Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on 45 counts of child sex abuse Friday night, resulting in an effective life sentence for the 68-year-old.
The guilty verdicts include 25 felony counts. Combined, Sandusky could be sentenced to 442 years in prison. Dressed in a brown sports coat, Sandusky immediately was taken into custody and led from the courthouse in handcuffs.
The jury—which included many people with close ties to Penn State—deliberated for only 20 hours on 48 charges against Sandusky. The two-week trial featured damning testimony against Sandusky, who was accused of performing anal and oral sex on boys as young as 8.
Despite the lack of physical evidence and the time lapse since the sex abuse, the defense was unable to discredit the eight accusers. Defense lawyers declined to put Sandusky on the stand.
Trial watchers were stunned Thursday when Sandusky’s own adopted son, Matt, said his father abused him as well.
The verdict almost seemed like a foregone conclusion, given how quickly the jury came back.
“I feel, like many others, that the rapidity which with this jury has reached (a verdict) makes it all but certain it should be a guilty verdict,” Michael Boni, attorney for "Victim No. 1" told CNN’s Piers Morgan minutes before the verdict was announced.
Even Sandusky’s own legal team didn’t expect an acquittal. Earlier Friday, Sandusky’s attorney Joseph Amendola said he would “probably die of a heart attack” if the ex-coach was found not guilty.
Tell us: Did the jury reach the right verdict? Vote in the poll and sound off in the comments.

Absolutely, it is the right verdict. These guys and probably many more lives were ruined. Lie detector tests??? Step away from the TV, Susan. Maybe if you understood the psychological and physical pain these men have and will endure their whole lives you wouldn't make comments like...victims don't appear to exist. There sure is a possibility that there are some that may have even taken their own lives.

It is horrible what this crime did to all the boys and men of the families involved also lets not forget the effects it had on the Paterno Family and his early death brought on by decisions of the Board members of Penn State who should have also been judged because of there actions or lack of.
Coach Paterno verbally could have communicated more but he did not. These crimes by Sandusky where known before the coach new. There were other people that new what was going on, but the board had too take the pressure off themselves by degrading Coach Paterno, who had brought more to Penn State with his Football programs and caring for the education of his players and financially by bringing more students to Penn State because of his reputation.
Yes Sandusky was found guilty of a horrific crimes ,but his betrayal to Coach Paterno and to the students and faculty of Penn State should also have been judged.

Joe Paterno was a man, a mortal man with faults and failings just like any other man. He let his pride and attachment to his legacy blind him to the rumors about Jerry Sandusky for years and ultimate led him to abdicate his moral responsibility when faced with an eyewitness account of child rape. Joe Paterno is not a victim and must be held accountable for his failure as a leader and as a man.

Joe Paterno died from the effects of Cancer. He did not die from being fired. Show me the medical examiners report that states otherwise.
Paterno, it seems, was a man who failed in his responsibility to protect people by being involved in a cover-up of sexual abuse. Regardless of whether OTHER people knew about it or not -- he did. And his failure to act on it and participation in the cover-up makes him as guilty as everyone else (except for Sandusky). Sandusky is guiltier of something far more heinous.

It seems plain and simple to me. The man abused those boys and he got what he deserves, period. Do you think they all conspired against him? I think not, he was seen porking the kid in the shower. The janitor saw him molesting a kid. His wife is in denial. A lot of people knew what he was doing and no one had the balls to stop it. They all got what they deserved. If they release Sandusky into the general population of the prison, I'm sure he'll meet Bubba " Big Banana " Smith in the shower sometime. He who craps on the path, meets flies on the way back. Amen.

Now that Sandusky is getting his punishment.
When do the parents of all those kids go to trial for negligence.
They should have never let their children be in the situation where they could have been molested in the first place.
Out of sight, out of mind is many parents way of thinking these days.
They deserve some kind of punishment as well...

Negligence would only apply if the parents knew or even suspected the kids were being abused. I most cases the kids never said a word to anyone. That's how pedophiles keep control, with threats. If that were the case, every parent would be held negligent for enrolling their kids in any activity that involved an adult as the leader. Boy scouts, cub scouts, baseball, wrestling etc. How would a parent police all those leaders? Unless the kids told the parents and they still allowed it to go on, there was no negligence.

Interesting comment but did you realize that some if not all of his victims were 'at risk' children. He prayed on the weak and most vulnerable. There was a report that one child was told that he wouldn't be allowed to return to his foster home if he told. It's evil. The greed of those who knew at Penn State allowed this to continue and they should all be prosecuted. I'm amazed at those who still blindly support the school and can't believe that anyone would send their child there or financially support them.

I believe the jury acted correctly. Essentially they offered no defense. Further, I also feel that future civil action will expose many others who have failed " to stand up". We have an obligation to protect and defend those who can not do so for themselves. People that knew, and chose to not go to police, will be burdend to carry that cancer in their hearts forever. Some, it will kill quickly, as it already has. Others will twist more slowly on the rope of moral bankruptcy.

Something to note is that Sandusky may still be able to collect his public pension while in jail. Unless it has changed, sex crimes against children has not been added to the list of items that void collection of a public pension. Brendan Boyle introduced a bill concerning this but it hasn't passed as far as I know.

I don't understand how anyone familiar with the details of the case can not believe justice was served by the guilty verdict. Jerry Sandusky is a serial pedophile and deserves to be in jail, at the very least. His actions have traumatized his victims, and they were very courageous to testify against this creep. Listening to his attorneys speak last night absolutely sickened me, they are already planning an appeal. Why bother planning an appeal when they couldn't provide a defense during the trial? Give up and let the guy rot in jail. He's hidden behind Penn State and his charity long enough. Let his victims heal and get on with their lives.

Another example of "the good old boy system". Everyone who covered up should be held accountable and prosecuted. What else went on that is covered up is the question now. All for the sake of greed and Paterno was part of it. Did they really think taking his keys away to the locker area was going to prevent him from abusing more boys!

Agree with it or not the jury has rendered their verdict. The question is will there be an investigation of university and law enforcement including the Attorney General to determine what these people knew, when did they know it and was there any action that should have been taken sooner? There are still too many questions unanswered. Will the politicians seek the truth or keep hiding it?

Rush to judgement,we are not the judge. The jury made their verdict. I do not agree with all of the counts, and feel that some were piling on. Did any of these victims, have a Doctor examine them? I will guess that even the most recent one has not, they would be able to come up with some physical evidence. Sad, so many lives ruined, there are many, many more Jerry Sandusky's out there.ont't forget that Fast Eddie Rendell was the governor when this happened, please stop blaming Tom Corbett, it is not fair. will also add, that cell phones & cameras have been w/these phones for more than 10 years now, where are some evidence taken with a camera?

I won't say that Paterno was totally blameless, but I found it shameful how they focused almost exclusively on him. Penn State leadership put a spotlight squarely on Paterno, so that higher ranking officials would be conveniently cast in the shadows of the spectacle surrounding Paterno.
And what about the eye witness? If you are the one who actually SEES this horrific act occurring with your own two eyes and all you do is walk away and tell someone - and not do all you can to make sure this predator is removed from society - how are you less to blame than Paterno? This is what burns me up the most. No, I don't think Paterno did enough, but he did not witness this crime himself, probably found it hard to believe, but he did report it to Penn State authorities. Then when this mess came to light he expressed he should have done more, which put a bullseye squarely on him.
Penn State's leadership pounced on Paterno's words. They used him as the scapegoat and as a perfect distraction from their own complicity. How cowardly. Perhaps it should be the Cowardly Lion instead of the Nittany Lion, at least for the Penn State leadership.
Again, Paterno did have a role in this, but he got railroaded because it was his name only on everyone's lips. And this is where the money talks, people. Sandusky and Paterno could not escape their fates, but when will all the others involved be held accountable? I guess money is a great insulator after all. How pathetic.

There are some people you should explain this too. I agree with you 100 percent. Paterno was the fall guy,he put the guilt on himself for what the Board had jumped on him for and made sure public opinion went against him when the Board new more but were afraid of tarnishing there reputations. At this time Paterno's cancer had gotten worse and because of the blame he took and as he said 'He should have done more' and being let go of the position he held and loved, Coach Paterno just gave up.People who new Joe said then this was going to cause him an early death and it did.
Now more investigations are in the works and some board member will be running.
How much blame should be put on the board for the hushing of Sandusky actions?
I hope the investigations are thorough and some how hope that some of the guilt will be lifted for the Paterno family sake.

I would hazard to guess that many of these individuals would have frozen in disbelief as well.
MANY people bear responsibility for the length of time this matter took to resolve beginning with the State College Police Dept, the Centre County District Attorney's Office, the board and employees of the Second Mile, Guidance Counselors at the schools where these youngsters went to school and many, many more.
Before we focus solely on the Penn State Campus, where there were admittedly many missteps, the entire Centre Region contains many people and organizations that failed in their mission to protect and educate young people.

Where was the public decision/investigation from the PA Human Relations Commission? How about the PA State Police, since these kids that were molested/raped crossed the County Lines, thus "intra-state" jurisdiction would fall into the State PA jurisdiction? Why wasn't Coach Paterno indicted, at the very least, for his knowledge of actions by his assistant coach??? Was Penn State, a private institution receiving public dollars (limited) more concerned with Paterno breaking Eddie Robinson's all time "win" record, rather than the kids being raped/molested? He was fired, immediately after he broke the record, even though it was know before the beginning of the season; in fact, it was know for years! Who would that ex DA be? Let me tell you, he is now the Governor of the State of Pennsylvania. And I can tell you here and now, NOTHING will be done because he will continue to wield power and force down opposition points of view just as he has done concerning Food Stamps, and assistance to the elderly, and privatization of the State Liquor system.
