Neikam Leads Falcons In League Battle With Phantoms

Pottsgrove senior shoots three-over-par in Pac-10 golf

PICKERING - The Pottsgrove Falcons have to feel pretty good about the amount of respect they are getting from Pac-10 foes so far this season.

“It’s like everybody is saving their best day for us,” said coach Roger Rentschler. “We have played a couple league matches and the team have put up great numbers against us, take today for example. Five score and the high is 54 is the high that is solid. We have played well, but haven’t been able to have five great scores in a day yet.”

Tuesday was just another chapter in Pottsgrove's story so far as Phoenixville threw outstanding scores at the Falcons with the low being 48 (one over par) and the high being 54, claiming a 259-282 league win for the Phantoms.

“We need to do a better job around the greens,” said senior Brandon Neikam, who posted the low round of the day for the Falcons with a three-over-par score of 50. “I kept feeling like the greens were faster than they ended up being."

He said he left too many puts short.

“Neikam played like a number one today that’s for sure,” said Phantoms coach Steve Winnich. “We had some kids really step up today, 259 is a great day here at Pickering Valley we were hoping for 268 or so.”

Neikam and partner Ian Laxton (55) both hit eight greens in regulation and it was a 70-foot putt that Laxton sank on number six that momentarily claimed the momentum for Pottsgrove and the due combined for a six-over-par after the first nine holes.

The combination of Brendan Bonner (53) and Matt Bierer (48) continued to apply the pressure as the Phantoms lead players finished the first nine with a combined 4-over-par tally of 38 each, with Bierer recording back-to-back birdies, while Bonner snagged on of his own.

“I think we will be fine as the season goes on,” said Neikam. “We have some guys that are still getting experience. We have some very talented younger guys and as the year progresses we will be in the hunt in most of the matches. I felt pretty good overall, but need to burry some putts.”
