Spend the "Night Out" in Pottstown
Annual event is intended to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, promote neighborhood spirit
Tonight, Pottstown will be one of over 15,000 local communities across North America will celebrate the 29th annual National Night Out, an event known as ‘America’s Night Out Against Crime.’
The event, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; garner support for local anti-crime programs and promote neighborhood spirit along with police/community partnerships.
Sgt. Mick Markovich of the Pottstown Police reported three different Pottstown locations that will hold National Night Out events:
-
Grace and Evans Streets, on the North End, will host an event from 5-8 p.m. with food drinks and games for children.
-
McGruff the Crime Dog will make an appearance at the event to be held at the intersection of Washington and Chestnut Streets from 4:30-8:30 pm the same evening.
-
Finally, local residents will have a gathering at North York Road and 5th street from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
“We’re looking to create a barbecue-type atmosphere—events where people can come out and show their neighborhood spirit to promote unity,” said Sgt. Markovich.

Wouldn't it serve the communities better if people gathered outside their residents and held
"neighborhood" get-together's to meet neighbors and show solidarity against the crime in their neighborhoods? By having events in separate locations doesn't let neighbors know neighbors and learn new faces. By having gathering places literally opens the door for burglars knowing that many homes will be vacant while attending these "Night Out's." Just sayin'.

I seem to remember (way back) when they first started it. If memory serves me, you were to go sit out front from 7 to 10, and also wander over to the neighbors to say hello (not forgetting the people living behind you).
