Back from Lake St. Clair Michigan!
It's time again for another round of "Fishing Fever". I just returned from vacation and managed to squeeze in a day of fishing on Lake St. Clair. Fishing Fever #29, posted two weeks ago, gave notice of my planned absence. It also contained some information about Lake St. Clair and the guide (Tom Curtis) that I have gone out with a few other times. I won't repeat all of that stuff but here is the link to go back.
The weather was a focal point on this most recent outing. The temperature was up in the high nineties and a strong wind had kicked up three to four foot waves. When I arrived at Anchor Bay Marina I was greeted with a smile and handshake from Tom. After a little small talk I questioned if the weather was too rough and if the Coast Guard might have warnings out. He assured me that it was ok and that he was just finishing putting gas in the boat. Tom is a bit younger than I and has the worst untreated case of Fishing Fever that I have ever came in contact with. Yea, he is a guide and yea he gets paid to do it but his passion for fishing is unsurpassed. I can hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes.
There are many guides on Lake St. Clair that target only Muskies for which the lake is famous for. Tom takes advantage of the variety that the lake offers. His trolling tactics produce not only the occasional Musky but many husky Smallmouth Bass and chunky Walleye. He is down to earth, honest and hard working when the fishing gets tough.
Although the boat was being tossed in all directions we had a good bite. The Smallmouth were hitting hard and a couple of Walleye found our hooks as well. See pictures for more details. After about five hours I was starting to feel the effects of constant up and down motion and indicated to Tom that it might be time to head into port. He reluctently agreed and we arrived back just in time to settle my tummy.
If you ever have the chance to visit this lake I recommend hiring a guide. Here is a link for the various guides on Lake St. Clair. http://www.michigancharterboats.com/stclair/
