PA Rated Highest In Nation For Deficient Bridges

Quick note, yet disturbing ...

Notice all of the bridge work in the area? There is good reason:

• 5,906 bridges in PA are rated as 'structurally deficient' making PA the worst in the nation. We are more likely to pass a degraded bridge than a McDonalds.

And works begins already. Expect Traffic Delays In Pottstown Next Week

The cracks, now repaired, in the bridge over Rt. 100 (Rt. 422 overpass) is a good example of a subject to question. Are there any civil engineers who can comment if the earthquake on August 23, 2011 had any bearing on the structural integrity of our bridges?

The fact that a bridge is rated "structurally deficient" does not mean that it is unsafe. It simply means that it is not up to a standard " . . . calculated per a formula defined in Federal Highway Administration’s Recording and Coding Guide for the Structure Inventory and Appraisal of the Nation’s Bridges."

Most older bridges do not meet those standards but are quite safe.

"It simply means that it is not up to a standard" Right. So PA rated highest in nation for bridges not up to a standard.
