Phoenixville, PA – Over 500 of Chester County’s aspiring scientists will participate in the Chester County Science Research Competition on March 4 and 5 at the Technical College High School (TCHS) Pickering Campus located at 1580 Charlestown Road in Phoenixville. The competition provides students the opportunity to pursue inquiry-based science and be recognized for their efforts through a variety of awards. The competition is also a feeder fair to the Delaware Valley fair, which provides students the opportunity to win college scholarships and advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Students in grades 6 through 12 will compete in the Lucy Balian Rorke-Adams Fair on Monday, March 4, and students in grades 4 and 5 will compete in the Jonas Salk Fair on Tuesday, March 5. The participants will compete in numerous categories including: Behavioral and Social Science, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Consumer Science, Earth & Space Science, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Medicine & Health, Microbiology, Physics, Zoology, and Team Projects.
The schedule for the Lucy Balian Rorke-Adams Fair for students in grades 6 through 12 is as follows:
- 8:00-8:45 a.m. – Arrival and set up
- 9:00-10:00 a.m. – Special Program
- 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Judging
- 12:30 p.m. – Dismissal
- 6:00-7:00 p.m. – Open House
- 7:00 p.m. – Breakdown and removal of projects
The awards ceremony for grades 6 through 12 will be held at a location and date to be determined. Only those students who have an award designation attached to their project board are asked to attend.
The schedule for the Jonas Salk Fair for students in grades 4 and 5 is as follows:
- 9:00-10:00 a.m. – Arrival and set up
- 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Judging
- 12:30 p.m. – Dismissal
- 6:00-7:00 p.m. – Open house and awards distribution
- 7:00 p.m. – Breakdown and removal of projects
While the competition is closed to the public (including parents and teachers) during the judging portion, there will be an open house on both days from 6 until 7 p.m. for anyone wishing to see the projects.
The Chester County Science Research Competition is a feeder fair to the Delaware Valley fair, which will be held at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center at Oaks, April 2–4. The competition will include some 1,000 students from New Jersey, Delaware, and southeastern Pennsylvania. Students competing at the Delaware Valley fair will have the opportunity to win their share of nearly $1 million in college scholarships as well as move on to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair hosted this year in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Chester County Science Research Competition is sponsored and conducted by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU).
