Perky-Pet® Donates 100 Bird Feeders to Schools Across the Country

In an effort to engage school children in bird watching and to encourage them to learn about the many benefits of birds, Perky-Pet®, the recognized leader in wild bird feeding, recently donated 100 bird feeders to schools across the country, from New Hampshire to California.

“With around 10,000 different species of birds in the world, children can learn so much from birds including diversity, environmental responsibility, and geography,” explains Jenna Lefever, category development associate at Perky-Pet®. “With our school program, we really want to teach children the importance of birds and their habitats.”

In May, Perky-Pet® donated hummingbird feeders and seed feeders to five elementary schools. One class in each school received a feeder for their classroom, a feeder for each child to take home, a field guide, and a birding fact sheet.

Upon receiving the feeders, teachers incorporated birding into their curriculum and taught students the significance of birds and nature.

Linda McNallen’s gardening club at Sam Rayburn Elementary in Texas received 20 hummingbird feeders from Perky-Pet®. Her students range from first to fifth graders who stay after school every Monday to help with the landscaping and growing of a school vegetable garden.

“We have been learning about the different animals and insects that visit our school and need the flowers and vegetation to survive,” says McNallen. “We feed the birds and hummingbirds here at school every week, so they were very excited to take home their own feeder and observe the birds in their backyards.”

Gretchen Lothrop, second grade teacher at Woodman Park School in New Hampshire, said that her children were thrilled to receive their own seed feeders. “When the bird feeders arrived, it was hard to contain the children’s excitement! We went outside to do a nature walk to decide where to place the classroom’s feeder. The others went home with the kids and they were ecstatic walking out of school with them.”

Birding is a wonderful activity for children because it is inexpensive, fun and allows them to be outdoors in natural surroundings. With its school sample program, Perky-Pet® hopes to get kids unplugged from technology and plugged into nature.

In addition, Perky-Pet® is encouraging schools to interact with each other and discuss the different types of birds they observe throughout the year in the various regions of the country.
