UPDATE: Pa. Turnpike Eastbound Reopened After Massive Pileup

The Pennsylvania Turnpike was closed heading east for most of Friday after a massive pileup involving nearly 100 vehicles, multiple media outlets are reporting.

The crash occurred at about 8:30 a.m. near mile marker 346, CBS reported.

At least 16 people were brought to Abington Hospital for the treatment of injuries, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. None of the issues were life-threatening, the Inquirer said.

CBS said a number of other local hospitals were on standby.

Initially both the east- and westbound lanes of the Turnpike were closed, with  emergency personnel using the westbound lanes to access the injured. The westbound lanes reopened first, and the eastbound lanes reopened around 4:15 p.m.

The Turnpike was closed between the Willow Grove and Bensalem exits.

After the initial crash involving at least 10 cars and five tractor trailers, there were apparently dozens of other accidents involving as many as 75 additional cars, CBS said.

A Pennsylvania State Trooper told The Inquirer that there were reports of vehicles traveling too fast for conditions, but no official statement has been made as to the cause of the crash.

Some motorists told CBS that road spray had coated their windshields and the sun was in the their eyes as they drove east.

There were also at least two accidents involving overturned cars in the westbound lanes of the Turnpike near the eastbound pileup, CBS said.
