Help Fight Cancer at BreastFest Saturday

On Saturday, September 28, the third annual BreastFest will be held at Mad River in Manayunk from 3-8 p.m.

“This will be our third one in Philadelphia,” Katie George said.

Katie George moved to Philadelphia two years ago with a mission.

“I was living in Baltimore and a friend of mind pulled me into this,” George said.

“This” was the Tyanna Foundation.

The Tyanna Foundation raises money for breast cancer detection and treatment.

“The money that we raise goes to local hospitals to help pay for a mammography bus,” George said.  “The bus goes around to neighborhoods where women can’t afford mammograms, and if cancer is detected the money we raise also helps pay for treatment.”

“We tell people that we’re a different kind of breast cancer organization.  You don’t have to run or anything,” George said.  “You just need to show up and have a good time.”

The event will feature six live bands, beer, liquor and food.

George said that the Tyanna Foundation tries to involve younger women from 25-35 years old because early detection is important.

“Everyone focuses on the number 40,” George said.  “That’s when you’re supposed to be getting annual mammograms.”

George added that this is an issue that affects all women.

“We’re so focused on 40, but women of all ages can get breast cancer.”

Last years BreastFest raised $23,000 for the Fox Chase Cancer Center, and 400-450 showed up for the event.

“What’s great about the organization is that all of the money stays local, and it is used to help local people.”

Tickets for the event are for sale online and they cost $40 per person.  Tickets at the door will be $50, and a student I.D. ticket costs $30.

“It’s a fun event, and people always have a great time,” George said.
