Are You Seeing Private Messages on Your Facebook Wall?

Many users complain formerly private messages are now publicly visible. Facebook denies it. Are you seeing this problem?

Some things are intended to stay private. Facebook  is used daily by over 800 million “active” users, according to their press offices. But did the internationally popular social media outlet recently allow private messages to be publicly displayed?

Many users claim “yes.” According to an article in the New York Daily News, the social media chaos began on Monday with reports in France.

Users there claimed that messages as old as 2006 to 2009 were being viewed on their personal Timeline features.

“A small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline,” Facebook said in a statement, according to Agence France-Press. “Our engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were older wall posts that had always been visible on the users’ profile pages.”

Users on TechCrunch.com and popular blogs like “What I Wore Today” have claimed otherwise.

“I have private messages published to my wall, as did my wife and many friends,” said one user on TechCrunch.

Facebook spokespersons say that is not the case.

“People went back and forth with wall posts instead of having a conversation,” the spokesperson said to the New York Daily news.

I have not noticed this problem but in order to see it, you would have to go back through your timeline for each year and read through the many posts that friends have left on your page; these posts are all collected in one box at the beginning of each year, but you have to click on them individually to read them. If you are concerned about this issue, a simple solution can be found at the end of this article. It took me about two minutes to do what the article suggests; http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/facebook-denies-reports-of-glitch-making-messages-public-1.969433#ixzz27PudcYMg

This IS happening. It happened to me and many friends. I can tell the difference between a PRIVATE message and a wall post and I did want to go back and check because my PRIVATE messages are PRIVATE. I'm not an idiot. I found a few mixed in with mostly wall posts. Even ONE could literally ruin a life. Facebook stands to lose everything because of this. Of course they are denying it. Facebook is a free service that is not free. It's privacy issues are a MAJOR problem. Major wake up call for me. Major.

if you are concerned about your privacy as a whole on FB, it gets a lot more complicated then hiding your wall posts. Some people use FB as email...they do business, exchange personal information. This is bigger than just adjusting privacy settings.

As an ex employee, I can say this is 100% false. These have always been wall posts. But don't trust me or the countless news sources that have debunked this rumor. Check for yourself. Your email archive will have what was posted on your wall, Facebook emailed you when your friend wrote on your wall or sent you a private message. There have not been ANY confirmed cases on this rumor.

Agree, this has been largely debunked on tech sites (techcrunch, The Guardian, Mashable...). If you are concerned about privacy, switch to Google+. The user has far more control there over who sees what.

lolz ok. This was PRIVATE information that NO ONE should see in a PRIVATE message and SAW it on my own wall. Whatever. If you are an ex employee then you also know that none of your information is safe on Facebook ever and even when you leave and delete your account they keep your info for life. Why would I make this up? Also, it's not like I'm some newbie. I am tech and FB savvy. I'm not an idiot. Plus, I took screen shots to prove it.

If you are concerned of privacy on FB, get off of it. Their privacy policy is longer than the US Constitution and if that does not tell you anything, then there should be no backlash to how they collect information from you and your "friends". Recall Facebook's CEO Zuckerberg said regarding FB users: "They trust me — dumb f***s," http://gawker.com/5636765/facebook-ceo-admits-to-calling-users-dumb-fucks

While the posting of PM's is not actually happening there IS something that Facebook has done and without warning or notification. Go to your profile and check your email address. They switched it to a Facebook address. You CAN opt out of it but it would'nt be nice of them to let us know first?
