Lower Pottsgrove Provider Shutting Down Coal Plants

FirstEngergy Corp. is closing two power stations by October.

FirstEnergy Corp., which provides power to customers in Lower Pottsgrove Township, will deactivate two of its Pennsylvania power stations by October because of the costs.

“The decision is based on the cost of compliance with current and future environmental regulations in conjunction with the continued low market price for electricity,” according to a statement from FirstEnergy.

Roughly 380 employees at the company’s Hatfield’s Ferry Power Station in Masontown and Mitchell Power Station in Courtney will be affected.

Last year, the company deactivated nine other power plants; now nearly 100 percent of the power generated by FirstEnergy comes from non- or low- emitting, including nuclear, hydro, natural gas and scrubbed coal units, according to the company.
