The Liberty 17 Fire Company recently honored Mervin Clemmer, a resident at Chestnut Knoll Personal Care and Memory Care, for his years of service to the company. The Liberty Engine Crew is consolidating and starting a new chapter of life, and because of this, the chief and president gave Clemmer a watch as a token of thanks for his service.
Clemmer was honored by George Fronheiser, trustee; Lloyd Wary, Fire Chief of Liberty 17 Fire Company; and Matt Rothermal, President of Liberty 17 Fire Company.
Liberty Fire Company was chartered in 1925. Clemmer was an Assistant Fire Chief, member of House Committee, and Secretary of the Death Fund Committee. He was also a waiter at the fire company, where he remembers beer cost a nickel.

Clemmer was interested in the company and got involved in 1945 upon his return from WWII, around 23 years old. Every Tuesday night Mervin would go to engine practice, and he and his good friend Ralph would make sure the young guys were doing it right. Two of the biggest fires he remembers were when Zern’s market and Schmoyer’s Lumber Yard burned. Liberty Fire Company was there for the common good.
PA State Conventions were held and everyone wanted to hang out with The Triangle Club, which was Liberty Fire Company, Friendship Hook and Ladder, and Keystone Steam Fire Engine.

Beginning this year, the three fire companies merged to form the Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue Company. The new organization will use the call name of Berks County Station 95.
“Thanks to people like Mervin, firefighters have the opportunity to serve in this fire company and follow in his footsteps,” said Jodie Daniels, assistant executive director at Chestnut Knoll. “We are so proud of Mervin and his accomplishments and we thank him for his many years of service with the Liberty Fire Company."
