Reading Woman Killed in Route 422 Crash, Officials Say

The 33-year-old driver was also injured in the crash, which closed down Route 422 in Lower Pottsgrove for several hours Saturday.

A Reading woman was killed in a one-vehicle crash on Route 422 in Lower Pottsgrove Township Saturday near the South Pleasant View Road overpass, according to officials.

Ruth J. Watkins, 44, of Reading, was ejected from a 2000 Chevy Geo Tracker that was traveling westbound on Route 422 around 11:30 a.m. when her vehicle, driven by a 33-year-old-male coworker, rolled over multiple times, according to the Pottstown Mercury.
Watkins suffered cardiac arrest and was taken to Pottstown Memorial Medical Center, where she was revived, according to report; she was then flown to Reading Trauma Center where she later died.

Watkins and the driver were returning to Reading from a work-related meeting, according to the Sanatoga Post.

The cause of the crash is still being determined; Montgomery County First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele said early indications were that a problem with at least one tire on the vehicle caused the crash.
