Steel River Playhouse OPEN AUDITIONS for THE MUSIC MAN

January 28 - 29, and Feb 2

Performances June 5-22 (Main Stage)

CASTING NEEDS

ADULT MALE ROLES

Harold Hill – age 30 – 50, charismatic and charming con man and traveling salesman; falls in love with Marian, average singer/mover. (Vocal Range: B to High G)

Marcellus Washburn – age 25 – 55, comical friend of Harold Hill and former con man; has settled down as a resident of River City. (Tenor: G to High A)

Mayor Shinn – age 40 – 65, pompous local politician, good comic timing. (Non-singing role)

Barbershop Quartet (members of the School Board) - All age 25+, important singing roles, capable of holding harmonies, some acting, possibly double as traveling salesman.
Olin Britt - editor of the Gazette. (Bass: A – High D)
Oliver Hix - (Baritone: C - High F sharp) 
Ewart Dunlop – businessman (Baritone: E – F sharp) 
Jacey Squires - owner of the livery stable (Tenor: B – High A)

Charlie Cowell – age 25+, traveling anvil salesman out to expose Harold Hill. (Non-singing role)

Constable Locke – age 25+, town policeman who is always ready to do as instructed. (Non-singing role)

Conductor – age 25+, very business-like with strong speaking voice. (Non-singing role)

Traveling Salesmen - age 25+, salesmen on train with clever, syncopated song in the beginning of the show – no singing but patterned to sound like a moving train. Written for 5 in addition to Charlie Cowell.

River City Townspeople – small town folks who are proud of their town. 

ADULT FEMALE ROLES

Marian Paroo – age 20s- 40, attractive town librarian and part-time piano teacher who falls in love with Harold Hill. (Soprano: Low G to High A)

Mrs. Paroo – age 45 – 60, mother to Marian and Winthrop, capable of Irish brogue. (Alto: A flat - High E flat)

Eulalie MacKecknie Shinn – age 35 – 65, self-important mayor’s wife, good comic timing. (Alto: D - High D)

Ethel Toffelmier – age 25 – 50 (a “curvaceous 35”), jolly and friendly, dating Marcellus. (Alto: D - High D) 

Pick-A-Little Ladies (4 to 8 women, including Alma Hix, Maud Dunlop, Mrs. Squires) – Age 25+, core group, strong singers, comic timing, move well, married to 3 of the Barbershop Quartet men. (Vocal Range: D - High D)

River City Townspeople – small town folks who are proud of their town. (Vocal Range: various)

CHILDREN AND YOUTH ROLES

Winthrop Paroo – male, age 6 – 11, Marian’s shy, younger brother, speaks with a lisp, begins shy and blossoms. (Alto: C - E flat)

Tommy Djilas – male, age 15 – early 20s, handsome “bad boy” teenager who has a crush on Zaneeta. (Non-singing role; moves well) 

Zaneeta Shinn – female, age 14 – early 20s, Mayor’s and Eulalie’s teenage daughter who has a crush on Tommy Djilas. (Non-singing role; moves well)

Amaryllis – female, age 8 to early teens, slightly bratty young piano student of Marian’s who likes Winthrop. (Alto: C to E) 

Gracie Shinn – female, age 6 – 11, Mayor’s and Eulalie’s younger daughter; a tomboy and a bit devilish. (Vocal Range: B – E flat)

Ensemble - teens and kids to play townspeople, teen dancers, Wa Tan Ye girls, boys’ band (Vocal Range: various)

AUDITION DETAILS (APPOINTMENT PREFERRED) 

*Please note that we make every effort to see you during your assigned timeslot. Because we engage directors who bring a variety of approaches to the audition process, and because we want to give each person individual attention, please plan to remain well past your assigned timeslot if needed. 

Initial Auditions – If auditioning for a musical role, please prepare 16 bars of a song and bring a copy of the music for the accompanist. Acting auditions consist of readings of scenes which will be made available at the audition. Monologues are NOT required or encouraged. APPOINTMENTS PREFERRED.

Tuesday, January 28th, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm.
Wednesday, January 29th - 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Sunday, February 2nd, 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm

Choreography Auditions - Wednesday, February 12th, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm. If called for a choreography audition, please wear clothes that allow you to move freely.

Callbacks - Thursday, February 13th, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm. Please note: you will be contacted by email about callbacks; please reply by email to CONFIRM that you will attend. We make every effort to contact each person by email about audition outcomes. If you do not receive an email or call within 2 weeks, please email casting@steelriver.org for more information.

REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES 

Rehearsals – March through early June, evenings/weekends, various times.

Performances – 3 weekends, June 5th – 22nd (Thurs @ 7:30 pm, Fri & Sat @ 8:00 pm, Sun @ 3:00 pm)
