SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNIZES STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Recently, the Pottstown School Board saw firsthand why more people are saving “Proud to be from Pottstown” when they recognized two students for their outstanding achievement. Senior Nathan Fuerman was recognized for receiving the Union League of Philadelphia Good Citizen Award. The Union League award states, “Honorees must demonstrate marked evidence of good citizenship as manifested by a cooperative attitude, self-control, perseverance, good sportsmanship, and efforts to uphold the best traditions and principles of the American way of life.” Nate is involved in many school activities. He is President of the Student Government, a member of National Honor Society, participates in the Air Force Junior ROTC program, is a member of the Rocket Club, Drill Team, and is a peer mediator. He also participates in track, cross country, marching band, concert band, and is a student ambassador. Nate has earned his Eagle Scout Award and works with the Sanatoga Volunteer Fire Department and the Sons of the American Legion. After receiving his award, Nate said, “It is a double honor to be recognized by both the Union League and our School Board. I am proud that my educational roots are in the Pottstown School District and thank my parents, teachers, and coaches for all they have done to help guide me.” Senior Trent Kancianic was recognized for receiving a Letter of Commendation in Recognition of his Outstanding Academic Promise from the National Merit Scholarship Program. The program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT Test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants. The test examines critical reading, mathematics reasoning, and writing skills. Trent was in the top 50,000 high scorers in the nation. Trent is the Captain of the cross country team, a cadet in the Air Force Junior ROTC Program, and participates in volunteer work around the community including the Carousel of Flavors and Riverfest events. He is currently taking Calculus and Introduction to Western Civilization at Montgomery County Community College and is enrolled in the Advanced Placement Computer and Environmental Science classes at Pottstown High School. Other Advanced Placement courses that Trent has successfully taken include Calculus, U.S. Government and Politics, Chemistry, and Biology. Trent plans on majoring in Engineering when he attends college. “I am fortunate to have received a solid, academic background to help prepare me for the future,” said Trent. School Board President Judyth Zahora expressed her pride, “I am proud of all of our students and these two young men certainly give us reason to say Proud to be from Pottstown.”
