What Do These People Have in Common? Volume VIII

.Mike Lunn – Class of 1956 – Played baseball and football and received most of his recognition as a catcher.  He was awarded the Sandy Hill MVP in 1955 and was a member of the PHS baseball team that won 48 straight games and was inducted into the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.  He played at West Chester State Teachers College and taught physical education before retiring in 1993.  He coached all secondary levels and excelled as the head wrestling coach at Boyertown High School. 

 ·      Marvin Whitehurst – Class of 1972 – He helped to lead the Pottstown High School baseball team to Ches-Mont League championships in 1971 and 1972.  As a senior, he had a 5-1 pitching record with a 1.96 ERA and had 47 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched.  He hit 364 and led the Trojans with four homeruns and 21 RBIs.  He is considered one of the fastest pitchers to ever play at PHS.  He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates 1973 and played three seasons.  With nearly 1,000 times at bat, he had a 250 average, 25 doubles, 9 triples, 19 homeruns, and stole 30 bases.

 ·      John “Jay” Nash – Class of 1972 – He graduated with 9 varsity letters and was a standout in wrestling, track, and football.  He was a heavyweight Sectional Champ two years and a Regional Champ once.  He had a senior year record of 19-1-1.  He held the shot put record at PHS for many years.  As a football player he was named First Team Offense and Defense, All Ches-Mont, and also Defensive Player of the Year.  He played in the Big 33 and the Montgomery County All-Star games and received a full scholarship to Maryland where he was a three-year starter on the offensive line.  He played in the Liberty, Gator, and Cotton Bowls.

·      Brian Campbell – Class of 1989 – He was a three time sectional champ and was named outstanding wrestler of those tournaments twice, a two time Southeast Regional champ, and a two time State Qualifier.  As a senior, he won the Silver medal in the State Tournament at 140 pounds and finished with a career record of 100 wins, 13 losses.  As a football player, he led the area in total yards his senior year with 1,249 rushes, 202 yards receiving, and 38 passing.  He scored 122 points on 22 touchdowns and two extra points.

·      Stan Glenn – Class of 1982 – Won eight varsity letters while at PHS in football, basketball, and track.  He received numerous All Ches-Mont honors in all three sports and accepted a full scholarship to the Citadel where he majored in business administration.  He was named Freshman of the Year in 1983 as a running back.  He graduated as a Second Lieutenant and is currently a special education teacher and football coach in South Carolina.

 

 

They were all nominated to the Tri-County Sports Hall of Fame and are graduates of Pottstown High School and are part of the 134 year tradition in the Pottstown School District of excellence in education.
