Pottsgrove SD Responds to Lockdown, Evacuation After Armed Standoff

Schools were evacuated on Wednesday after an AWOL National Guard member shot at police in Lower Pottsgrove.

The Pottsgrove School District released a statement Wednesday regarding the lockdown and evacuation of district schools after a six-hour shootout in Lower Pottsgrove during which an AWOL National Guard member died, according to reports.

"At approximately noon today, the Pottsgrove administration was notified of police activity in Lower Pottsgrove Township adjacent to the District’s main campus. Ringing Rocks Elementary, Pottsgrove High School, Lower Pottsgrove Elementary and District Office went into lock-down," according to the school district.

Schools participating in various summer programs from Ringing Rocks Elementary and High Schools were transported to the middle school; students were released at roughly 2:45 p.m. and Lower Pottsgrove Elementary students were released later in the afternoon.

The school will announce on Wednesday evening that it is safe to return to campus tomorrow. 

"As always, the safety of our students is a top priority," said the statement.  "We will review the events of the day, as we endeavor to find ways to fine-tune our emergency protocols. "
