Pottstown Mother Speaks Out in Child Endangerment Case

April Saul, 42, said she and her husband, Daniel Rivera, 43, only decided to remove their daughter after Lehigh Valley Hospital refused their repeated requests to have the child sent to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The Pottstown mother who was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, after she and her husband removed their child from Lehigh Valley Hospital against medical advice, has gone on record as saying she was just trying to help her baby.

According to a report by the Pottstown Mercury, April Saul, 42, said she and her husband, Daniel Rivera, 43, only decided to remove their daughter after Lehigh Valley Hospital refused their repeated requests to have the child sent to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The report also states that the 5-month-old girl has a heart defect, and despite Lehigh Valley Hospital lacking the specialist required for her care, the hospital stated that they could not transfer her to CHOP because Medicaid would not pay for it.

“Danny and I pled, in meeting after meeting with Lehigh Valley, for months,” Saul said, in the Pottstown Mercury report. “We kept saying, ‘We feel as though you lack expertise. We feel as though our child has issues you can’t address. We want her transferred. What do we have to do to get our baby transferred?’ For months we were just getting the runaround. ... They were just completely uncooperative.”

The couple now faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child, as well as charges of disorderly conduct for allegedly using obscene language in the pediatric intensive care unit of LVH.

This story just keeps getting more and more twisted everytime I read it.Bottom line is parents have rights and the right to advocate for optimum healthcare for their child. If a parent slacks off they are condemmed. If they fight for their child apparently they are too.Too much government in our lives. This doesn't feel like a democracy at all.By the way...CYS has withdrawn their petition and the parents have custody and they had custody when they were fighting to get the baby transferred.Family court sided with the parents and decided they had the right to have their baby at CHOP.There is a whole lot more to this than anyone knows.Besides, the bottom line is the parents were doing what they needed to do to save their baby's life and she is now in the best children's hospital in the world!

I just do not understand why you would just take your baby out of the NICU after being advised that it was not a good idea. I realize that you wanted her to get the care that she needed, but what if she would have died while out of the hospital with you? There was a reason she was in the NICU, if she was healthy enough to not be in there, they wouldn't have kept her there.
