Eagles' Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo Out, Todd Bowles In

The struggling NFL team fires its defensive coordinator, names Bowles as replacement.

Eagles fans have had much to complain about this season. As the Birds head into their bye week at 3-3, many are calling for some heads to roll. Andy Reid seems to have taken the call to heart.

According to multiple reports, the Eagles fired defensive coordinator Juan Castillo Tuesday morning and named secondary coach Todd Bowles as the new coordinator.

"I want to make it clear that I have nothing but the ultimate respect for Juan Castillo as a coach and as a person," Reid said in a statement released by the Eagles. "He is one of the finest football coaches that I have ever worked with. He has served this organization extremely well for 18 years and letting him go was a difficult decision. I know he will continue to be a succesfful coach in this league and wish he and his family nothing but the best."

The team will have an extra week to get into its new groove, as no game is scheduled this weekend.

"We are six games into the season and average isn't good enough," said Reid. "I know the potential of our team and insist on maximizing it."

The Eagles have lost the last two games in the final moments with leads against both of its opponents. The Birds were ahead of both Pittsburgh and Detroit when the defense let the opponents pull ahead, with both games resulting in a loss.

According to Yahoo! Sports, the team's defense was still ranked in the Top 5 of the National Football League, leaving many to wonder if Castillo is a scapegoat for the Eagles.

What do you think about this staffing change for the Eagles?

Too little, too late. Get rid of Andy Reid and Michael Vick and then we can talk.
Hans Solo October 16, 2012 at 03:31 PM

It was written in the classifieds that you happen to love her and you are so very angry that she doesn't love you. That so? Peace.

Reid should go. He became a horrible coach. Can't he look in the mirror and see that its time to retire or get canned? And Vick dosen't know what he likes better... killing puppies or killing drives?

Absolutely

That's the problem. You have a terrible game day coach who doesn't know how to change his offensive gameplan on the fly. And then you have a QB who has no idea what's going on around him, has virtually no ability to read defenses, and whose only audible is to run the ball. A bad gameday coach and a bad field general for a QB spells a team that will never go far in the playoffs (if they're lucky enough to make it). This has been Andy Reid's problem through much of his career and the only times he's really done well is when it had others around him to clean up the mess.

Sit down all these high-paid starters (without pay) ...and play the rookies, just they did in pre-season. Watch them win!

Since the Defense was 5th in the NFL this is obviously a scapegoat move by Reid to convince everybody he is acting to try to improve things. It's all for show to save his own hide. Too bad he can't fire the Quarterback!
