Phillies Adding Metal Detectors to CBP

Something new is coming to Citizens Bank Park: metal detectors.

The Phillies will be installing the walk-through metal detectors beginning July 7, the team said Tuesday, and fans will have to pass through them to gain entry to the park beginning July 21.

"The increased security measures are the result of Major League Baseball's continuing work with the Department of Homeland Security aimed at standardizing security practices across the game," the Phillies said in a statement Tuesday. "By the start of the 2015 season, all clubs will be required to implement a program for screening every fan prior to entry at each Major League ballpark."

Fans entering the park will be scanned before their tickets are checked. Just like at the airport, cell phones and cameras will have to be removed before fans pass through the scanners.

Unlike at the airport, fans can keep their shoes and belts on, the Phillies said.

Anyone who cannot walk through a metal detector will be scanned with a hand-held unit, the team said.

These new security measures are in addition to the existing bag checks, which will continue. 

"The safety of our guests is our top priority," said Sal DeAngelis, Phillies Director of Operations/Security. "We fully support MLB's efforts to implement these enhanced security measures, and look forward to working with them during this pilot program. Next year, we expect that metal detectors will be at all entrance gates."
