Cupcake War Fights Leukemia & Lymphoma

Local woman fights cancer through cupcake contest

According to the National Cancer Institute, there have been 48,610 new cases of leukemia and 23,720 deaths so far in 2013.  While the exact causes of leukemia and lymphoma are unknown, research is ongoing to better understand this deadly disease.

To help in this fight against cancer, Katharina Fachin Lucas is organizing a “cupcake war” as a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Katharina is raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) because of their extensive funding of patient care and blood research.  Katharina’s older sister, Christiana, is in remission from lymphoma.  Effective treatment has given her 7 years with her children.  Katharina’s best friend Luci, lost her first husband to leukemia.

People who enter the cupcake war contest will donate $25 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  They will bring their cupcakes baked and decorated.  A panel of expert judges will pick the best tasting and best decorated cupcakes for prizes.  Prizes are donated by local businesses such as Rita’s Water Ice of Pughtown, and ACAC fitness and well center of West Chester.

The public will also take part in picking the winner by tasting mini-cupcakes for $0.25 or regular sized cupcakes for $0.50.  The winner chosen by the public will receive a different prize.
