Viennese Waltz: History, Romance ... And A Real Workout!

Cheryl Burke is a champion dancer on ABC's TV show Dancing with the Stars and dance studio founder.

It looks like a fairytale dance. You feel like you're flying. And when done at its best, this dance can leave you as breathless as a marathon footrace! No dance captures the aura of romance, elegance, and graceful movement better than Viennese Waltz. This was the original Waltz style – before modern variations, including the standard ballroom Waltz in 3/4 time. Read full story on our sister site, Mountain View Patch. Dance Parties Are For Fun, Lessons Are For New Steps

Cheryl Burke is a champion dancer on ABC's TV show Dancing with the Stars and dance studio founder.

Studio dance parties are ideal opportunities to enjoy social dancing, practice steps learned during classes or lessons, meet new people and relax from work-related stress. In attempting to be helpful, sometimes dancers correct their partners or show them new moves during parties. They may feel this is beneficial, but it can also make the evening less pleasant. If dancers simply remain aware of the following guidelines, their weekend social dancing may turn out to be the most fun they've had all week: • The leader is expected to accommodate the skill level of a follower and convey a sense of complete acceptance for that level. The job of the leader is to lead, not instruct. •  A good leader assumes the right dance position (or "frame"), …

"Not dance above their partners level" - very important. Took me a couple years to learn this (I do Argentine Tango) - now dancing is so much more fun. Best wishes to you Cheryl.   more ›

Burke, Levy In Middle Of Pack After Rumba

From our sister Patch in Mountain View, CA for which Cheryl Burke is a blogger ...

The competition does not get easier with each new week of Dancing With the Stars. In fact, as the weakest celebrity dancers drop off, the fight for the Mirror Ball trophy intensifies. With a tip of the hat to Motown this week, Cheryl Burke and her Latin soap-opera celebrity star William Levy swayed to the smooth sounds of Smokey Robinson and performed the rumba, ballroom's sexiest dance. While a drop from last week, the score still impressed Bruno, who gave Team Fuego a 10. Carrie Ann Inaba gave them a 9 and some advice. "I don't think that was your best dance," said Inaba. "There were some moments when you guys were disconnected and I'd like to see more content. Because you are not just a pretty face. You are a beautiful dancer." But …

Despite Injury, Red Hot Tango By Levy and Burke

Nine teams battled it out Latin-style during week five of Dancing With the Stars.

Apparently William Levy, half of Team Fuego on Dancing With the Stars, hurt his ankle during rehearsal Sunday—but you wouldn't know it from his powerful footwork and smooth handling of partner Cheryl Burke on Monday night. "I saw mood, I saw passion, I saw sensuality and color, well done," said Len Goodman, the toughest of the three judges who last week criticized Levy's Jive. This week the pair's tango scored a 29, their highest of the competition. It was Latin Night on the dance program and the nine remaining couples had plenty of opportunities to shake their hips, shimmy across the stage, while at the same time adding that extra bit of sex appeal that probably went a long way when the public voted. Still, the other teams continue to …

Burke and Levy Falter as Competition Heats Up on Dancing With the Stars

During week four of the dance program, judge Len Goodman critiques Levy for failing on technique.

Cheryl Burke tried to get Latin soap star William Levy to Jive—unsuccessfully according to judge Len Goodman on Dancing With the Stars Monday night. "Well, it is, what it is. You went long, you lost timing during the end part," he said, but was interrupted by the booing audience, "The show is live, you can't say 'let's do it again.' I see a pattern coming. Last week you went long, this week you went long. You have to nail the routines William, otherwise anything can happen." Team Fuego scored a 22, their lowest so far this competition for their routine—a six point drop from last week's 28. Still, the Mountain View dance studio owner, two-time Dancing With the Stars Champion and former Menlo Park resident, Burke, and Levy remain in the …

Dancing With the Stars Kicks Off With Hot Cheryl Burke and William Levy Cha Cha Cha

DWTS' Cheryl Burke: The "Three Point Method" for Better Ballroom Dancing

Cheryl Burke is a champion dancer on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars."

By Cheryl Burke Many of us in the professional dance community sense an increasing number of people in recent years have resolved to learn some form of ballroom dancing. New Year's resolutions for 2012 are barely two months old, and by now you may be one of those "beginners" who has experienced the thrill of your first classes. There is also a good chance you're becoming impatient ... Read full story on Mountain View Patch.

DWTS' Cheryl Burke: Waltz–The 'Mother of All Dances'

Cheryl Burke is a champion dancer on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars" and blogs on Mountain View, CA Patch.

By Cheryl Burke Ballroom dance instructors often tell their students, "Waltz is the mother of all dances." That statement is based in part on its popularity, dating back to the 16th century.  Regarded as the "mother of all dances" also means this is a dance that opens doors to other styles and a better "presence" on the floor, whether you're doing a Rumba, a Foxtrot or any other ballroom dance. ... Another quality of the Waltz that I especially like is that it can be done to almost any level of physical exhuberance. It works well whether big and grand with large steps across the floor or small, peaceful, and intimate and confined to a small space on the dancefloor. Then again there is simply nothing as catchy and melodic as "Tempe de valze". Thanks for a nice dance post on the Patch.   more ›
