Pottstown's Whitehurst, Schmidt Head To Quidditch World Cup

About 100 teams and 2,000 players participate in the tournament according to the International Quidditch Association, which regulates the sport based off the game in J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter.”

Janelle Whitehurst and Casey Schmidt -- both graduated last year from Pottstown High School where Schmidt was salutatorian -- are players on the University of Richmond’s quidditch team. This weekend, the team will go to Randall’s Island in New York City to compete in the fifth annual Quidditch World Cup. According to the International Quidditch Association, the game from Harry Potter -- adapted by Middlebury College students in 2005 -- is now played at over 300 universities and high schools in the U.S. and 12 other countries.
